Coming to End of EIR.

Coming to end of EIR. From this module, i learnt how to do my research more efficiently and effectively. Through the activities i got to know friends from other courses and also people from Hong Kong.
Before coming to this module, i only know how to get information through Google. But after lessons and practicals, i know things like, meta search engine, subject directory.

Despite having lots of practicals and blog post to do, i managed to finish them in time and also i would like to say that those assignments are really interesting, such as the online shopping spree and dream holiday.
We got to use Facebook as well as Twitter to engage in topic discussions.

All these days, Miss Farida has been helping us alot with researching and also to keep us engaged in topic discussions.
Once again, Thank you Miss Farida for your time.

^^ Good bye.

Secondlife PolyU collab

So, there was only like three hongkong students online during the e-learning activity. Whereby it is really difficult for our EIR students to be able to chat with them, but some of the hongkong students are really willing to help out by staying with us till 11pm. I manages to chat with 2 people but one ignored me and the other logoff soon after the first question. So i will talk about the one who at least answered me one question.
The problem that most of us face is not being able to find a hongkong student to chat with.

Name of hong kong student: Shek Blogger
Course: Modern Software Technology

Me, phuayhao and rongyi shared and asked him questions like :
  •  How do you protect yourself from the bad effects of the undesirable aspects (eg cyber sex, gambling, bullying etc) of using Second Life?
  • Any recommendation of food and places of interest

He said that he would turn off any strange invitations, using internet filters.
He recommended us to visit Ocean park if we were to visit Hong Kong for holiday.
And also to try out the dim sums, he also pointed out that we have dim sums in Singapore too. Which i think that he visited Singapore before too!

Pictures, Enjoy!
:
The person standing infront of us three sexays is the hongkong student who chatted with us.

He told us about Ocean park and dimsums in Hong Kong!

*We found out that we could change our character's appearance.
and we decided to change our bodies to something really hot. LOL

I'll end here,
'Cheers! ^^

Secondlife Virtual Holiday!

In secondlife, i can teleport anywhere i want! which is really convenient... (How i wish that can happen in real life...)
Okay, back to topic. So i am supposed to travel around secondlife..(Holiday)
so i decided to visit first, california..

I visited California Shore as i was not able to access the California Beach.
When i reached the shore, it felt as if it was real.. there are houses and fishing ports built at the sides of the shore.

From the two images above, i found animals! But there are not moving around..
It really surprises me because i felt as though i was at a farm. Cows, Sheeps, Goats...

There was also playground/ shelter at the shore.
And you could also sit on benches. to relax and enjoy the breeze.

After exploring the shore for awhile... I decided to visit Korea too! Since teleporting is really convenient. ^^
When i reached korea, i entered a huge shopping mall and i found some other characters from other countries like the U.S, Japan, Taiwan people.. And they have really weird taste of clothing for their character.
From the image at the bottom, you can see a person dressing up like Optimus Prime from Transformers.

Overall, i think that virtual holiday is not as enjoyable as real life holiday. Because you don't get to eat their local food personally. And also the beautiful scenes of the country cannot be replaced by computer programmes.
In conclusion, being able to travel to any country i want in virtual makes me a little happy. ^^ But it will still be best if a person experience things in real life than virtual.

Cheers!

Dream Holiday

San Francisco, California. Yes, this is my dream holiday. Renowned for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, mix of Victorian and modern architecture and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and Chinatown. The main reason why i want to go San Francisco is because of their modern architecture and also to experience what it is like to be enjoying the fog on a mountain during Summer.
Therefore i searched for a travel guide to San Francisco, California.
http://gocalifornia.about.com/od/casfmenu/San_Francisco.htm

File:San francisco in fog with rays.jpg
Fog is a regular feature of San Francisco summers.

This website introduces San Francisco with other than just images, it tells you where to go for sightseeing, getting a hotel, or even find maps and more.

There are some famous places in San Francisco that i really wanted to go to:

Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco Peak.

File:Ocean Beach in San Francisco at sunrise.jpg
Ocean Beach.

Westfield San Francisco Centre. (Shopping Mall)

Overall,
I think that this website is pretty good in terms of providing the user with informations of San Francisco and it also guides he/she when they want to visit SF. Like what to take note of, the famous sightseeing places, shopping, food and even transportation. There is also a search bar at the right of the website that could also help people get informations of other than just about San Francisco.
But in terms of presentation and layout, the website is a little in a mess.
which i think that it will cause the user to get distracted with the ads and etc.
To conclude, i would say that this website is good and also helpful to people who wants to travel to San Francisco. With this site, it makes ours live much more easier when travelling.
Hmmm, maybe someday.. i will get to visit San Francisco to enjoy the view from the peak and also get some great pictures on the Golden Gate Bridge, Beach and most importantly the food there...

Cheers! ^^

Practical 8 & 9

Today we learnt how to evaluate Internet resources based on identified criteria. Decide whether a certain webpage is relevant.
So after today's lesson, i realized that in a website, there are the purpose, authority, accuracy, accessibility, coverage, currency, layout & presentation and usability.

After the lesson of evaluating websites, i realized that there are lots of pages that lack of layout and presentation, with the help of this lesson, now i know whether this website is good/bad.
Websites that are good are mostly organisational webs with helps from the professionals.
Overall, i felt that it was rather a tedious job evaluating a website.

Tutorial 3 & 4

a.    How has Twitter (micro-blogging) enhanced your learning of EIR? Compare this with your blogging experience using Blogspot.
Twitter alows the user to reply instantly to people's response and Twitter also allows people to share video, image, music or links. But the words are limited to only 140.
Blogspot is more of like a page of your postings. but it is unable to let people reply to comments.
Compared to blogspot, twitter can be used almost anywhere on mobile phones, be it the bus, train or cars.

b.    How can you use Twitter and Blogspot for research purposes?
Through twitter, you can follow people and throught their posts, you can know how a person actually feel by starting a discussion.
With blogspot, you can actually rss feed another person's blog and you will get the latest updates.

Practical 7

Evaluation of Stomp.com.sg

Stomp is a website that allows users to share/ contribute their findings, thoughts, video, images or even just words for discussion. Stomp is updated by stompers (people who post stuffs on stomp) whereby they want to share news or even some topics with other people.

Home Page:
The home page is a little too cramped with news and articles around.
The most visited page is the Singapore Seen category. Because Stomp is mostly visited by Singaporeans and they want to know what is happening around them.

Categories:

There are many categories in stomp.
S'pore Seen: What people post on Stomp as they see daily.
Talkback: A forum where people chat and discuss about stuffs.
Just talk lah: A place where people just talk/chat online.
DIY video: Videos posted by stompers and wanting to share stuffs.
Jobs: More of like a job finder to assist people who are searching for job.

Connect with Stomp:
Anyone can Connect with stomp to get the latest news/ articles through Facebook, Twitter, Youtube or Rss feed. Which is really convenient.
And you also can share the posts on Stomp on your Facebook account.

Articles by STOMPers:

As you can see from above, stomp sometimes show latest news and even what Singaporeans see in their daily life. For example on the left, you have the news regarding the Downtown East Murder, it is considered as the latest news in Singapore. And on the right, a photo captured by a STOMPer and was being shared with other Singaporeans about the woman's behaviour.

Mood Meter and Comment Section:
The mood meter serves as a survey to understand what the readers really feel about the article and the mood meter has got dialect like "Bochup" and "Shiok!" which brings out the Singaporean style of speaking.

The comment section is right at the bottom of the article and only members of the stomp is able to express what they feel and to give their thoughts regarding the topic.

In conclusion, Stomp is a platform where people share news in Singapore. But there are also several articles that are only about complains, complains and complains. Which i think that it does not benefit anyone at the end. So basically, i think that Stomp is a useful website that provides people with news.
